Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls in Niagara Falls, New York near Buffalo, New York and bordering Canada is another great place to visit.  I went there part of a US east coast tour and had an awesome time on Maid of the Mist boat ride.  The ride is under $20 and it takes you really close to the falls where you’ll get soaked even with the rain gear they provided.  More info about Maid of the Mist here: http://www.maidofthemist.com/en/ .

You can google Niagara Falls for other general info.  The tour that I went on is from a Chinese-American tour company : http://www.americaasia.com/tour.aspx?locale=en-US&tourid=936

Maybe a lot of people know about this place already but I’ve only discovered it within the last year.  It’s a really nice place and you can see the Hollywood sign from it as well. It has free admission and free parking (although a small lot) while the planetarium cost a small amount for 1/2 hour show ($5 for students, $7 for adults).  I’d like to see the planetarium show but keep getting rushed the two times I visited so I haven’t been able to see it yet.  More info here: http://www.griffithobs.org/

Posts of  places helped me when I wanted to get a recommendation or just some info so I thought I’d starting posting some too.  I’ll start posting random places under the “Travel” category.  I’ve been pretty lazy so almost all of my posts are under the default category.  Although this is just a park, I don’t want to have a separate category so I’ll just put it under travel…  I did the Willow Canyon to Willow Canyon Rd path for a total of 3.7 miles in about 2 hrs back in April 2010.  It was pretty nice but I didn’t like the small street of Laguna Canyon Road => too many traffic since it was close to the beach and only 1 lane!  I originally wanted to do the Little Syncamore and Serrano Ridge path but that location didn’t have enough parking.  I’ll do that next time.   Parking was $3/car paid at a machine in a dirt/rock parking lot.  For more info & hike paths at the OC park website: http://www.ocparks.com/lagunacoast/

i’m back after 1.5 years. wow, how time flew!  probably was just lazy but I figure I should start writing again because supposedly, it’s healthy or something…

so last week, i was sort of going through this phase where i started freaking out about what i’ve done since high school, people i talked to would say i’m lucky to be where i am with everything i have and while that’s true, with the economy still down, the craziness of school and work, and thoughts of marriage/kids were starting to get to me.  I was freaking out about how i only have like 5 years left until i want to have kids and how i wasn’t okay with giving up my job for the kids and etc.  basically, i was greedy in family and work life.  anyhoo, times like those make me wonder why i ever wanted to grow up.

$80k a year is enough in retirement?

so i was calculating how much i should put in my 401k so that i’ll have a comfortable retirement.  anyway, so i was entering numbers into one of those online calculators and it returned a million or two dollars so i divided by 25 years because i assume i’ll live till 90 yrs old, and then the number came out to like $80k per year.  so i was like super!!! and then i went on and input some other numbers and came up with like some other amount to save for my kids college and then like it hit me.  $80k per year for my retirement is for the year 2050!!!!  so with 3.5% inflation, that is only like $20k per year in today’s money, which is not very good if i have to pay like almost $10k for health insurance.

yup, i finally figure it out.  getting older is not very pleasant.  stay young!

2 years goal update

i was browsing back to what I wrote in sept. 2007 post and here was what i wrote:

well, there’s a path for each individual. dream big, maybe it’ll happen. like me trying to get into CalTech/UCLA/USC for the PhD in hopefully 2 years. come back to see if i made it then okay?
so let’s see.  I’ve been to 2/3 of those schools, just not for phd but for graduate classes.  that’s kind of accomplishments right?  i’m not sure about my goals for the next 2 years anymore.  i gotta finish up my master for sure, but as for the phd goal, that seems to be somehow OBE (overcome by event), i.e. getting further out of reach…

it’s almost summer again

it’s been a couple of months now since i wrote here. time flies. and i guess it’s already summer for semester kids while quarter school kids still got a couple more weeks. i wanted to take a class this summer but there isn’t much offering in the summer. kinda depressing.

been a bit busy with work and school as usual. it’s just not been good since the economy went crashing. i had to start brushing up my resume and i found out that i don’t have that much skills beside some excel and matlab simple data processing. stuff that’s not really what i’ve learned about in school == can’t really find the motivation to look for jobs that are exciting.

although i was really excited last month when i was trying to do some optimization at work using the gradient method. basically, the gradient descent is this math optimization that can get you to the local minimum the fastest or at least faster than if you were to do things randomly. anyway, the math says it should work but of course, things never turn out quite what you predicted. i’d say that almost 2 years of working, i got about 3-4 tasks of one month duration that i’m really excited and actually think about the work outside of work hours. is that a good or bad???

new year

it’s 2009 for quite awhile already, but it’s just the 2nd day of the year in lunar calendar.  i went to little saigon area yesterday and play http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bau_cua_ca_cop.  I won $2 so I feel good for the new year.  let’s hope so cuz last year wasn’t very fun.

anyway, I’ve been a bit busy lately cuz working 40 hours & commuting 60 miles each day don’t really leave much time for anything else. I’ve learned to be content, maybe a bit less ambitious than I used to be cuz some things are more clear nowadays. maybe. happiness is always good.

race against?

i usually have things in my head but when i got in front of a computer and logged in this site, i’ve lost all the things i wanted to write about.

anyway, one thing that i’ve discovered lately is that i shouldn’t race to be the best or to get ahead or whatever.  i feel like life is like a race, sometimes you’re ahead but other times you’re behind and you don’t really know who wins because you’re constantly ahead and behind other people.  those people might be the same ones and not necessarily different.  for example, you can graduate in 4 years from undergrad while some other people take 5 or 6 years to graduate.  then you went to work and stop your studies while the same people that you know took 5/6 years to graduate but went on to graduate school and so forth so you are behind them in that sort of definition.  of course, you can become rich and have your own company or manage a lot of people while those people with master or phd end up making way less than you are.  so basically, everything’s relative.  success can be in many ways and forms.  so don’t be in such a rush to graduate, enjoy your carefree years and try different things.

sorry for the long delay in posting.  things are a bit busy these days and traffic is pretty bad with the kids back in school = more time on the road.

on a happy note, i was shoe shopping for someone last week and i couldn’t decide between two different pairs.  so i was like trying the two pairs on, mix matching and such.  so there was this little girl about 3 years old looking at me talking to myself and looking at the mirror.  anyway, so i asked her what pair she thinks is better but i think she was afraid of talking to stranger or something so she just stares at me.  Then after a while, her sister came over , maybe about 5 years old, and she responded which pair she likes.  Then i asked her why she picked out that pair and she said she doesn’t know :)

and a couple of weeks ago, i had to do my yearly self performance assessment write up.  It’s kinda crazy since I didn’t know what to write.  I didn’t want to sound like I’m perfect but at the same time I wanted to capture what I’ve done.  I stayed up past midnight to finish my write-up, something i’ve never done even with school work all these years.  after all that consideration, i still feel like uneasy.  we’ll see what happens when i get it back in a couple of months after the bosses give their input against mine.

MD vs. Phd

Not that I’m currently applying but I found some info and I was thinking about comparing these two.  Some good info to know in case I want to try one of these in the much much later future.

DEBT: MD usually will loan about 50k a year while Phd students would get free tuition + about 15k stipend a year from research or teaching undergrad courses.

LENGTH & TESTS: Time to graduate for MD is about 4 years mostly while Phd can range from 4-7 years depend on how long it takes for them to finish their thesis.  MD has 2 years of coursework and the last 2 years are spent doing rotational in hospital, clinic, etc.  I assume they would have a test where they are doing something on a human and a test similar to a lawyer bar exam to get their license.  Phd also spends about 2 years of coursework with separate written and/or oral overall tests beside the ones in the coursework and then the next 2-5 years doing research on the thesis.

GPA: GPA maintain during the MD and Phd program.  I assume MD would require only about > 2.5 GPA during the 4 years because I saw the dentistry at UCSF has this requirement.  Phd GPA need to be > 3.0 for Chem at UCLA while > 3.5 for Electrical Engr at UCLA.  Most other schools would probably be in this range.

POST-GRADUATION:  MD will have to spend 3-4 years in residency making about 30-40k/year while Phd would also spend about 3-4 years doing post-doc research with salary of about 30-40k as well.  Some might be able to get some Assistant Professor tenure-track position and make about 70-80k/year or they decide to enter the work in the industry, then they can make about 100k/year.

CAREER – POST-POST-GRADUATION: After residency, MD will make about 120k or higher each year continuing to about 300k/year or more as they grow older.  In the meantime, Phd who were post-docs would then apply to an Assistant Professor position at some university to make about 70-80k/year, then get Associate Professor and eventually Full Professor after 10-15 years, making ony about 150k/year by the time they reach Full Professor.  Industry Phd would probably had moved up in the companies, perhaps making about 130k/year or higher depending on technical or management track.

DEMAND: MD are usually in more demand than Phd.  I’d say MD have better chances of finding job although this is only my own opinion because people are always sick.  Depending on the kind of Phd, it would be hard to find job in the industry.  Especially in engr, some field like might not be popular anymore like analog stuff.  A lot of people use cell phones, even their homes have digital phone, digital cable, and not much of the old analog phone.

ADDITIONAL COMMENT: I think MD is a better choice.  I think MD are more like people who applied the theories into practice while Phd are people researching those theories.  But if you want to find some cure to a disease or something, you’d probably need to be a Phd in biology and not an MD.  Neither have time to do both.  Personally though I’d like both of them.  Some people have both degrees…

master in 5 years

I finally understand why some people choose to continue with school and finish in 5 years now.  i didn’t think about it back then just cuz i was confused about what i wanted to do after undergrad, i.e. continue with master and work or just master alone or go toward a different field.  i think if i was just mainly concentrating in engineering only, I might have done the 5 years to get the master.  things make a lot more sense after you’ve been through them rather than while you’re still figuring them out.  some students are smart to know what they want and invest in their education.  for those who don’t, try to figure it out so you don’t waste your time.  although if you’re juggling several things at once then don’t be too hard on yourself because everything can’t go the way you wanted them to.  each path gives a different meaning to life.  you learn different things and meet different people.  only 1/2 or 1/3 or etc will turn out what you wanted so be thankful and try harder next time.

another thing i realized, young adulthood really is confusing.  you try to get established but it’s confusing cuz you don’t know which is the right path.  i think one of my biggest fear is that 5 to 10 years will pass by and I won’t know what I’ve accomplished.  maybe i shouldn’t care about it too much since it’s only several years that i’ve been able to decide what’s best for me (still learning how to do it) and yet i’m thinking about the next 10 to 20 years. oy… i think i need to work and study a bit less so my brain can stop all these absurb thinkings.  perhaps more vacations.

backup plan

if u’ve been around me long enough, you’d know that i have mostly plan out my life for like 4 years ahead or something.  when i started undergrad, i planned out what i was gonna take throughout undergrad.  at first, i was gonna double major in chem and electrical engr so i had everything worked out so that i can graduate with both degrees.  with that plan, it’d take me 5 years to graduate.  so then i figured out a new way to graduate within 4 years and still be able to take all the classes needed to apply to pharm school.  pharm wasn’t a particular interest for me but i did it anyway since i thought i should make my parents happy… only i ended up screwing my life but that’s not the point since i’m looking at the glass half-full here.  anyway, so the new plan was just to minor in bio and took enough chem and other classes to apply to pharm school.  the point is that, at least i had a backup plan.  when i didn’t get in pharm school, i started looking for eng jobs.  i guess i got caught up in the working world that i forgot to make backup plan nowadays.  it’s kinda sad that once i work, life’s so busy that maybe i’ve changed who i am.  maybe i just got cocky for a moment there.  perhaps this is a lesson for me to get a grip of reality.  sorry if this is kinda confusing.  overall, always have a backup plan.  it’s not a fun way to live but at least you’ll know where you’ll end up.
